Australia’s General Skilled Migration program provides pathways for appropriately skilled people whose qualifications and experience may contribute to Australia’s workforce.
These pathways are points-tested and may involve a skills assessment, English-language evidence, an Expression of Interest and, depending on the visa, state, territory or eligible family sponsorship.
Skilled Independent Visa — Subclass 189
The Skilled Independent visa is a permanent visa pathway that does not require nomination by an Australian state, territory or employer.
Applicants must first submit an Expression of Interest and receive an invitation before applying.
Skilled Nominated Visa — Subclass 190
The Skilled Nominated visa is a permanent pathway requiring nomination by an Australian state or territory government.
Each state and territory applies its own nomination criteria, occupation priorities and selection processes in addition to the federal visa requirements.
Skilled Work Regional Visa — Subclass 491
The Skilled Work Regional visa is a provisional visa for eligible skilled applicants nominated by a state or territory government or sponsored by an eligible family member.
